"You can count on Germany"

“Germany must be a strong partner for Ukraine and a strong pillar in Europe", emphasized Federal President Steinmeier at a summit to mark the third anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had invited numerous heads of state and government of important supporting states and high-ranking representatives of the European Union to the meeting.

Let me deliver my main message right at the beginning, because it is important to say that my country went to the polls yesterday, and what we see today, this morning, is that there is a clear majority of Germans who have voted for the democratic centre. A clear majority have voted for Europe, for Ukraine, and for the defence of democracy. And, most importantly, the people of Germany haven’t forgotten what happened three years ago.

Nobody with open eyes and an open heart can deny the truth: It is Russia who started this war. It is Russia whose tanks rolled into Ukraine, three years ago. It is Russia who wants to bring down Ukraine and threaten the free and democratic Europe.

So, dear colleagues, what has happened in the past two weeks? Russia may have gained an open ear in the White House. But they have not gained an inch of legitimacy. No wrong has turned right. No war crime has been forgotten.

Does anybody honestly think that some thoughtless conversations or some reckless statements can crush our resolve? Can make us give up our principles or make the wrong choice? No, quite the opposite: the past two weeks have only strengthened our resolve as Europeans. More than ever, we have to stand up for ourselves and for Ukraine!

For three long years, the people of Ukraine have fought for their freedom, day by day, night by night. We have to make sure that their bravery and their sacrifice have not been in vain! We have to make sure that Ukraine achieves a fair and lasting peace!

No matter who talks to whom – there is no meaningful negotiation without Ukraine. And we have to make sure that Ukraine will not be forced to accept a bad deal!

Peace cannot be bullied into existence. Peace must be won by all of us together. That is our responsibility. If we have the will to do it, we have the strength to do it. Europe is already Ukraine’s biggest supporter. 135 billion euro have been provided by EU members alone. So let’s boost our efforts, especially in military support.

This is the most fateful moment for Europe since the Second World War. The people of Ukraine, and the people of Europe, expect us to uphold Ukraine’s freedom and the security of Europe.

Germany must be a strong partner for Ukraine and a strong pillar in Europe throughout the coming weeks. The democratic leaders of Germany are aware of their great responsibility, and I will hold them to their words. You can count on Germany.
