Federal President Joachim Gauck has congratulated Nelson Mandela, former President of the Republic of South Africa, in a letter sent to him on the occasion of his 95th birthday today. In it, the Federal President writes:
"Your life’s work has shown South Africa and the world that it is possible to overcome racism, hate and oppression, to embrace reconciliation and democracy. You are a source of inspiration and encouragement to people all over the world who are working for freedom and respect for human rights and human dignity. Your unwavering dedication to the goal of a new, free South Africa and your understanding of the need for flexibility and compromise along the way have made you the architect of the rainbow nation. South Africa can be rightly proud of this history."
