The two presidents discussed the military situation and political prospects. Germany is the world's second largest supporter of Ukraine.

"It is in our own best interests to continue to support Ukraine," said the Federal President. "No one wants peace more than the Ukrainians. But if Putin gets his way, that would not be peace - on the contrary: it would be a major threat to the whole of Europe."
