From 21 to 23 June, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier payed an official visit to the Kyrgyz Republic.
In the capital Bishkek, the Federal President held talks with President Sadyr Japarov. At the OSCE Academy he discussed with students and scientists from the region, together with OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid, who accompanied him. Moreover, the Federal President visited the German company Interglass in Tokmok and met culture professionals as well as representatives from civil society.
Climate change and its impacts were in focus on the last day of his trip. During a visit to the Ala-Archa Nature Park in the mountains, the Federal President talked to scientists about the impact of climate change on Kyrgyzstan’s mountains and glaciers and on the water supply in the region.
Prior to this, he had travelled to the Republic of Kazakhstan for a state visit. The Federal President emphasised the geopolitical importance of these two Central Asian countries with his trip and sent a signal of partnership to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in the difficult neighbourhood of Russia and China. In so doing, the Federal President underscored Germany’s interest in diversifying its political, economic and energy policy relations. The Federal President was accompanied by a business delegation during his travels.
