Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the Federative Republic of Brazil from 31 December to 3 January to attend the inauguration of the new Brazilian President. On 1 January, he took part in the official ceremony in Brasília marking the return to office of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Federal President Steinmeier’s participation in this event was an expression of his high regard for the democratic transfer of power in the largest country in South America, as well as his desire to kick-start a new phase in the strategic partnership between Brazil and Germany. He further held political talks with other heads of state.

On 2 January, the Federal President travelled with Germany’s Environment Minister Steffi Lemke to Manaus and into the Amazon rainforest. He thereby intended to reaffirm Germany’s support for protecting the rainforest and to underscore the importance of the rainforest for international climate policy. Federal President Steinmeier hopes that the new Brazilian Government’s assumption of office will lead to more positive steps to protect this vital resource.

In the rainforest, the Federal President visited the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) and learned more about the relationship between forest condition and climate change. He also discovered more about the challenges involved in forest conservation in Manaus, at the environmental authority’s monitoring centre, from which deforestation across the entire Amazon basin is being observed.
