From 27 to 28 February, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier paid a visit to the Republic of the Sudan.
While in the Sudan, the Federal President gained an impression of the political and social fresh start following the decades of dictatorship. The first visit by a Federal President to the Sudan since 1985 is a demonstration of solidarity and support for the country’s further transformation.
In the capital Khartoum, the Federal President had political talks with Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan. He also found out more about current developments and about expectations for the future during meetings with Sudanese civil society. During a visit to the National Museum, the Federal President also learned more about the Sudan’s rich history, which stretches back to ancient times and was – and continues to be – intensively explored by German archaeologists.
The Federal President was in Kenya before travelling to the Sudan.
