Compulsory Social Service

Taking the opportunity once in your life to leave your familiar environment and focus on those living in a completely different situation: that is the idea behind compulsory social service.

I am convinced that compulsory social service is an experience that forges bonds between people of different walks of life.

At the start of his second term in office, the Federal President unveiled the idea of compulsory social service. It is to last for at least six months but no more than a year and be something that can be done at any point in life. Everyone should have the choice.

In Germany, we have millions of people voluntarily looking after others showcasing responsibility, a desire to help and enterprise. However, there are not enough young people wanting to follow in their footsteps. Compulsory service can help people get to know each other and break down barriers. Everyone in society stands to benefit from these experiences.

Compulsory service can help get people talking to one another and strengthen democracy. If people encounter different perspectives, engage with different views and put themselves in other people’s shoes, they are more likely to be prepared to get involved, to debate, as well as to forge and accept compromise.
